Total Number of Tree Swallows Fledged 1991--2005

During the nesting season, which starts in March or April, and lasts thru July, the boxes at each site are monitored weekly.  At the appropriate time, optimally 10 days, the nestlings are banded.  A numbered Fish and Wildlife band is placed on one leg, and a colored band on the other.  The colored band designates the year that the nestling was banded, so that if seen in the field it is possible to determine the age of the bird.  Adult birds are banded only if found in the box with eggs or nestlings.  This does not in any way harm the bird, and after 12 years of experience there has not been an instance of abandonment due to handling of the adult.
